Queen have been named the UK’s most played rock act on radio and television in the 21st century, according to PPL, the music licensing company that licences the use of recorded music on radio, TV and in public places. Airplay data from stations across the country shows the band has accumulated more than 400 million seconds of airplay this century, roughly 12.5 years of continuous play. A Kind Of Magic is listed as the band’s most aired track, with I Want To Break Free, Don’t Stop Me Now, Somebody To Love and Radio Ga Ga among their most played songs.

Sir Brian May, Queen’s guitarist, said: “Astounding news! Bearing in mind that most of Queen’s major works were done in the 20th century, it’s amazing to top a 21st century list. Big thanks to all our fans.” The company noted that PPL licenses the use of recorded music on radio, TV and in public places and compiled the rankings from airplay data collected nationwide.

Peter Leathem, PPL chief executive, said the chart shows rock music across the decades continues to thrive on UK airwaves. The list places David Bowie in second, with U2 third; Oasis is fourth and Fleetwood Mac fifth. The rest of the top ten comprises Stereophonics (sixth), The Rolling Stones (seventh), The Police (eighth), The Killers (ninth) and Kings of Leon (tenth).
