Karen Carney joins Strictly Come Dancing to rebuild confidence
Karen Carney, the former England footballer who played for Chelsea and Arsenal, has joined Strictly Come Dancing for its 23rd series. She is paired with professional dancer Carlos Gu.
Carney said she signed up to rebuild her confidence after facing criticism for women commenting on men’s football. She described the backlash she faced around four years ago as very challenging and said she has since focused on resilience and hard work, and on doing thorough preparation.
Carney and Gu became the first footballers to top the Strictly leaderboard in 18 years after their jive to Blondie’s One Way Or Another earned 31 points on the first live show. Carney also highlighted the importance of suitable facilities for women footballers, noting that access to the right dance floor, shoes, nutrition and a supportive training environment helps players perform at their best.
