The Scottish Liberal Democrats say data obtained via a Freedom of Information request show 4,049 self-harm incidents in Scottish prisons since 2021, including more than 2,700 cutting incidents and 168 attempted suicides, according to the Scottish Prison Service (SPS).\n\nJustice spokesperson Liam McArthur said the figures underline a broader problem and urged stronger action. He argued that Scotland’s high remand levels and frequent self-harm highlight the need for a properly funded justice system, improved throughcare and more mental health professionals across the prison estate. He added that prisoners should be prepared to reintegrate into society on release.\n\nThe Scottish Government said safeguarding and mental health in custody is a priority. It noted that the suicide prevention strategy, Talk to Me, remains in use while a review due by summer 2025 will inform further action. Officials said the self-harm action plan prioritises staff training, and a 24/7 dedicated concerns line is now available in all SPS establishments. SPS also said it uses peer mentors and listeners, trained by the Samaritans, to support people on arrival and throughout their time in custody.
