An amber warning for damaging winds has been issued for parts of northern Scotland, with gusts possibly exceeding 90 mph in places. Most of Scotland is under a yellow rain warning, while a separate yellow wind alert applies across the UK. Travel disruption is expected to continue after Friday’s cancellations of flights, rail and ferry services. A building collapsed in Glasgow on Friday, hitting a car and prompting city-centre road closures. Power cuts were reported in the Highlands and some islands, and road closures affected traffic across the city. The Forth Road Bridge was shut to all traffic, with other spans similarly restricted.
By Saturday morning, the Tay Road Bridge had reopened with a 30 mph speed limit but remained closed to high-sided vehicles, as were the Skye Bridge, Queensferry Crossing and Clackmannanshire Bridge. CalMac Ferries warned many services would be disrupted on Saturday and into Sunday. The Scottish Government urged people to delay non-essential travel and to check ahead if heading out.
Network Rail said the storm had hit more severely and more quickly than forecast, with over 60 incidents in the first two hours, including flooding, fallen trees on overhead lines and debris on the tracks. Glasgow Central services were suspended while engineers assess damage, and crews were working to clear lines overnight. The Met Office forecast places gusts of 50-60 mph in many areas, rising to 60-70 mph in exposed parts, with gusts above 90 mph possible in northern and western Scotland. The weather will bring heavy rain and difficult driving, particularly for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes. Winds are expected to ease through Saturday afternoon, but remain very strong in the Northern Isles and far north of Scotland through Saturday night.
