Dame Sarah Mullally named first female Archbishop of Canterbury
Dame Sarah Mullally has been named the first female Archbishop of Canterbury, becoming the 106th holder of the post. The former chief nursing officer for England will take on the role in an archbishop-designate capacity ahead of a forthcoming legal ceremony to formalise the appointment. The position had been vacant for almost a year after Justin Welby announced his resignation over failures in handling an abuse scandal, with Archbishop of York Stephen Cottrell carrying most interim duties during the gap. The Crown Nominations Commission, chaired by Lord Evans of Weardale, approved the candidate by a two-thirds majority, after which the preferred name was sent to the Prime Minister and then to the monarch for approval.
