Four people were injured after a car was driven towards members of the public and a man was stabbed outside the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Middleton Road, Crumpsall, Manchester. Greater Manchester Police said officers were called to the scene at about 09:31 on Thursday. The suspect, believed to be the offender, was shot by firearms officers. A bomb disposal lorry arrived later, and the force declared a major incident at 09:37.

Four members of the public sustained injuries from the vehicle and stabbing. Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham said the suspect is believed to be dead and one victim appeared to be a security guard who had been stabbed. The Prime Minister was due to fly home from a European summit in Denmark to chair a Cobra briefing after the incident. Keir Starmer said he was appalled, adding: “The fact that this has taken place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, makes it all the more horrific.”

Video footage circulating online showed armed officers at the scene and bystanders being directed to move back as a gunshot was heard. North West Ambulance Service said resources had been deployed and that their priority was to ensure people receive medical help as quickly as possible. A Jewish bystander described the day as sacred for the community, and the Community Security Trust noted heightened security at Jewish festivals.
