Hunter Bell secures 800m silver as Hodgkinson bronze at Tokyo worlds
Georgia Hunter Bell edged training partner Keely Hodgkinson by 0.01 seconds to take the silver in the 800 metres at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. Kenya’s Lilian Odira won gold in a championship record time of 1:54.62.
Odira surged clear on the final straight to claim victory, with Hunter Bell posting 1:54.90 for silver and Hodgkinson finishing in bronze. The British pair had led the race before Odira overtook them both.
Hunter Bell had considered contesting both the 800m and the 1500m at these championships but opted to specialise in the 800m, and the two athletes had been room-mates at a pre-event training camp. Hodgkinson had only recently returned from a 376-day injury lay-off after becoming Olympic champion.
