Wightman takes world silver in Tokyo 1500m as Kerr pulls up in final
Great Britain’s Jake Wightman won world silver in the 1500 metres in Tokyo after the defending champion Josh Kerr pulled up during the final. Isaac Nader of Portugal took gold. Wightman finished in 3:34.12, 0.02 seconds behind the winner.
Reynold Cheruiyot earned bronze with a time of 3:34.25, while Dutch favourite Niels Laros was fifth in 3:34.52. Neil Gourley also lined up, finishing 10th in the same race, the first time the three Scots had competed together in a world final since Doha in 2019.
Wightman said his aim was to win and that he would have been happy with any podium finish. He added that coming so close made him wonder what might have been, but he felt he had left everything on the track.
