Former Tory minister Maria Caulfield defects to Reform UK
Maria Caulfield, the former Conservative health minister and ex-MP for Lewes in East Sussex, has defected to Reform UK. She lost her Lewes seat at last year’s general election and has since left Parliament, with the move coming a day after a sitting Tory MP joined Reform.
Caulfield had previously returned to nursing after leaving Parliament and switched her allegiance to Reform UK about a month ago, according to the reports surrounding the defection.
Separately, Danny Kruger spoke at a press conference to say the Conservative Party faced deep challenges and that his discussions with Reform over the summer had included the possibility of joining. He urged colleagues who shared his view to consider Reform. Shadow chancellor Mel Stride rejected the suggestion that the Conservatives were “over,” saying the party still had time to rebuild trust with voters and would continue to hold the Government to account.
