Protesters gather outside Epping asylum hotel as police impose dispersal measures
Protesters gathered again outside the Bell Hotel in Epping, which houses asylum seekers. They stood behind metal barriers across the road, waved Union Flags and saluted passing drivers as horns sounded.
Police were stationed nearby, with more officers on patrol in vans in surrounding streets. An asylum seeker housed at the hotel has been charged with sexually assaulting a teenage girl last month and has denied the allegations. Essex Police said protests must end by 20:00 and must not block the road. A Section 60AA order is in force, giving officers power to order the removal of face coverings. A dispersal order covering the main High Street and the area around the Bell Hotel will remain in place until 04:00.
Somani Hotels, which owns the building, and the Home Office won a legal challenge against a High Court ruling that would have stopped 138 asylum seekers from being housed there.
