Police say the gunman fired 116 rounds from a rifle into Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis as pupils celebrated Mass, killing two children and wounding more than a dozen others. The suspect has been named as 23-year-old Robin Westman, who had previously attended Annunciation School and was a member of the neighbouring parish church. Westman, armed with a rifle, a shotgun and a pistol, died by suicide at the scene. Two children aged eight and ten were killed, and 15 other pupils aged six to 15 were wounded, along with three parishioners in their 80s.

Investigators are examining videos and writings left by Westman. FBI Director Kash Patel said the attack is being treated as domestic terrorism and a hate crime targeting Catholics; officials say the material also shows hostility toward multiple groups. Police have recovered hundreds of items from the church and three residences and are seeking warrants to search devices. A YouTube channel linked to the shooter, titled Robin W, reportedly posted videos showing weapons and ammunition and containing messages such as “kill Donald Trump” and “Where is your God?”, along with references to past mass shooters. Some writings are described as being in a centuries-old Slavic script. Federal officials described Westman as transgender, though officers noted the gender identity was not clear.

Hours after the shooting a large vigil was held, with Governor Tim Walz and clergy in attendance. Archbishop Bernard Hebda said: “In the midst of that, there was courage, there was bravery, but most especially there was love.” Officials said the wounded range in age from six to 15; one child remained in a critical condition and 11 others were in hospital. Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Walz ordered flags lowered to half-mast on state and federal buildings. The Vatican said the pope sent a telegram of condolences. Annunciation’s school year began on Monday, and parish staff described the response as heroic, with teachers shielding pupils and older students protecting younger ones. Police said officers responded immediately, provided first aid, and helped rescue some children.
