Grimsby Town goalkeeper Christy Pym said the moment had not sunk in yet after his side knocked Manchester United out of the Carabao Cup in a 12-11 penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw at Blundell Park. Bryan Mbeumo struck the crossbar with his second kick as the shootout extended to 18 minutes to decide the tie. Pym, who is a United fan, spoke of mixed emotions but said nights like this are what you play football for and that he could have done better in the shootout.

Charles Vernam gave Grimsby the lead in the 22nd minute, drilling a low shot past Onana at the near post. The Mariners pressed and doubled their advantage before half-time when Vernam’s cross deflected for Tyrell Warren to turn in. Mbeumo pulled United back in the 75th minute, and Harry Maguire headed in an 89th-minute equaliser to force a shootout. Vernam admitted nerves during the shootout, describing the wait as tense and saying the squad had belief guided by manager David Artell.

Pym said he had made one save to keep Grimsby in the contest and that the rest of the team did the heavy lifting. Grimsby advance to the next round of the competition after a dramatic win at Blundell Park.
