Demonstrations outside hotels housing asylum seekers are planned for Saturday in several towns and cities across the UK, with events run under the Abolish Asylum System banner. Protests are due in Bristol, Exeter, Tamworth, Cannock, Nuneaton, Liverpool, Wakefield, Newcastle, Horley and Canary Wharf in central London, while Aberdeen and Perth in Scotland and Mold in Flintshire, Wales are also set to host demonstrations.

A separate batch of protests organised by Stand Up to Racism is planned in Bristol, Cannock, Leicester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Wakefield, Horley and Long Eaton in Derbyshire. On Friday, protesters and counter-protesters gathered outside the TLK hotel in Orpington. A large police cordon separated the two sides, and police later said there were no arrests.

Legal action over asylum hotels intensified this week. On Tuesday the High Court granted Epping Forest District Council a temporary injunction to remove asylum seekers from the Bell Hotel in Epping, Essex, from 12 September. The government said it would appeal the High Court’s ruling not to allow intervention and would also appeal against the temporary injunction. Other local councils have said they intend to seek legal advice about securing similar injunctions for their hotels.
