A man has been convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to a nine-year-old girl who was shot outside the Evin Restaurant on Kingsland High Street, Hackney, on 29 May last year. The child was struck in the head as six bullets were fired from a passing motorbike while she sat with her family. Three men at a nearby table were also injured. Police and prosecutors said the attack was part of a long-running feud between Turkish gangs in north London.

Javon Riley, 33, of Tottenham, north London, was found guilty at the Old Bailey of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to the girl and of attempting to murder Mustafa Kiziltan, 35, Kenan Aydogdu, 45, and Nasser Ali, 44. The three men were said to be connected to the Hackney Turks gang, which had a rivalry with the Tottenham Turks, with which Riley had links. The court heard that Aydogdu had previously been injured in a separate shooting.

The gunman has not been identified. Jurors were told Riley played a key role before, during, and after the attack, including reconnaissance of the restaurant, spotting targets, and driving the gunman away in a stolen car later burnt out. The jury deliberated for six hours and three minutes before delivering the verdict by a large majority. Riley was remanded in custody for sentencing on 12 September. The nine-year-old girl spent three months in hospital and remains with a bullet lodged in her brain, while the three male victims sustained gunshot injuries to the arm, leg and thigh. Det Insp Ben Dalloway, who led the investigation, said the family’s lives had been altered and urged anyone with information to come forward. Scotland Yard has offered a reward of up to £15,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest and prosecution of the gunman.
